What is Bible Club?

Fun is the operative word. Everyone has lots of fun. Bible Club is a safe place. A place where children know they are loved, accepted, wanted and valuable. For many of the children it is the only time they truly fit in and are able to relax. How is this achieved?

Bible Club is designed to let the children who attend know Jesus cares about them. Each section of the lesson plan is written with the hearts of wounded children in mind

Backed with the prayer support of their churches, volunteers go to shelters, parks, beaches, transitional housing, the streets, - anywhere there are hurting and lost children - to lead Bible Clubs. We have found that holding a Club for two hours each week at the same time and in the same location is the best format. Two hours is enough time to complete the lesson and build relationships. Since homeless children tend to move often, it is also important to meet with them on a regular basis.

When the time for Bible Club approaches, volunteers round up the children to bring them to Club, while the teacher prepares for the lesson. Usually after the first Club some children will be waiting for you to arrive.  When everyone is gathered a volunteer or older child marks the roll sheet and the singing begins. Prayer leads into the Bible teaching which includes: a review of the previous lesson's primary principle, Opening Our Hearts - an object lesson or activity to spark the children's imagination, Hearing God's Word - the Bible teaching, and Think About the Meaning - review and application of the lesson. A memory verse is introduced to the children. The remaining three components of Club may be done in any order, but most of the time you will do the craft, athletic activity and then enjoy a healthy snack. At the close of Bible Club there is time to spend talking with the kids and cleaning up.

(Each of the highlighted segments of Club described above is based upon the lesson plans located in the curriculum published by In His Arms, entitled, Straight Truth - 52 Bible-Based Lesson Plans to Help Kids in Crisis.) Go to Lesson Plan Components to see a complete outline. The Bible Club Sample Schedule shows how the lesson plan components fit into a two hour Bible Club.

Children, of all ages attend Bible Club and are welcome.  Babies too young to speak and curious grandmas have all been regulars at Club.  Throughout the time spent together, leaders and volunteers demonstrate the love of Jesus. A combination of planned teaching and spontaneous occasions provide the chance to model Jesus to children who have no idea what healthy relationships and a godly lifestyle are like.

Bible Club is flexible and adaptable.  No two Clubs are exactly alike. Not everyone uses the Bible Club model at a homeless facility. Some creative ministry alternatives include summer Vacation Bible Schools in government subsidized housing; short-term mission trips to orphanages or inner city after school programs.

Two hours once a week may not sound like much of an investment, but during the brief time we are able to touch the lives of the children who attend, every opportunity is used to introduce them to the person and character of Jesus Christ.  This simple approach is radically transforming the lives of little children.

Bible Club Leadership Roles

You’ll need six volunteers if a different person fills each leadership position. A minimum of three leaders can easily combine responsibilities. These combinations allow time for each leader to prepare without rushing:

w Worship Leader and Sport Director

w Bible Lesson Teacher and Memory Verse Leader

w Craft Director and Snack Coordinator

Additional volunteers can support the leaders and spend time building relationships with the kids.

Leadership Role Descriptions:

Worship Leader

w Prays during the week. Ask God to use the songs to prepare the children’s hearts for the lesson and to draw each of them closer to Him.

w  Prepares to lead the songs suggested in each lesson.  May add additional songs.

w Enthusiastically leads songs with live or recorded music or no accompaniment.  Provides an example of worshiping God through song.

Bible Lesson Leader

w Prayerfully prepares the Bible lesson. Asks God for insight on how to meet the children's needs and for Him to eliminate distractions.  Prays for each child by name for salvation.

w Gathers necessary visual aids, teaches the Bible lesson, answers questions, leads the children in prayer and any discussion

w Remembers that the children may not have any prior knowledge of the Bible, while relating the lesson to the challenges facing them

w Builds healthy relationships with the kids

Memory Verse Leader

w Prayerfully prepares to teach the Bible verse, asking God to touch each child's heart.

w Prepares a visual aid or helps the children locate the memory verse in their Bibles then leads them in reading or reviewing the verse

w Keeps it fun and optional, not a competition, with each child's effort, not success, receiving praise

w Prepares and maintains a chart to track each child's progress. (See In His Arms curriculum entitled, Straight Truth - 52 Bible-Based Lesson Plans to Help Kids in Crisis for chart construction directions.)

Craft Director

w Prays that God will use the craft to lead children to salvation and that it will remind each child of the Bible lesson for that day.

w Gathers, prepares materials and makes an example craft project prior to Club

w Explains how to make the project.  Assists children in completing their projects that day.

w Assists the children in writing their names on their projects and returns them to the children before they leave

Sport Director

w Prays for the sport to draw older kids and prays that no one will get hurt

w Gathers the necessary equipment

w Explains and directs the activity

w Encourages the children by praising their strengths, promoting good sportsmanship, cooperation, and fun rather than competition

Snack Coordinator

w Prays that kids who are hungry will feel free to join Bible Club during snack time. Asks God to give the children strength from the food and for there to be enough food for all who come.

w Plans and prepares or enlists help in preparing appealing, nutritious snacks, brings paper products and trash bags

w Is an example to the children by helping them serve one another, pray for the food, learn to eat as a family and clean up

w Makes friends with those who come only for the food by introducing herself and letting them know they are welcome.

Let the little children come to Me, do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.   Matthew 19:14
