Fun
is the operative word. Everyone has lots of fun. Bible Club is a safe place. A
place where children know they are loved, accepted, wanted and valuable. For
many of the children it is the only time they truly fit in and are able to
relax. How is this achieved?
Bible
Club is designed to let the children who attend know Jesus cares about them.
Each section of the lesson plan is written with the hearts of wounded children
in mind
Backed
with the prayer support of their churches, volunteers go to shelters, parks,
beaches, transitional housing, the streets, - anywhere there are hurting and
lost children - to lead Bible Clubs. We have found that holding a Club for two
hours each week at the same time and in the same location is the best format.
Two hours is enough time to complete the lesson and build relationships. Since
homeless children tend to move often, it is also important to meet with them on
a regular basis.
When
the time for Bible Club approaches, volunteers round up the children to bring
them to Club, while the teacher prepares for the lesson. Usually after the first
Club some children will be waiting for you to arrive.
When everyone is gathered a volunteer or older child marks the roll sheet
and the singing begins. Prayer leads into the Bible teaching which
includes: a review of the previous lesson's primary principle, Opening
Our Hearts - an object lesson or activity to spark the children's
imagination, Hearing God's Word - the Bible teaching, and Think About
the Meaning - review and application of the lesson. A memory verse is
introduced to the children. The remaining three components of Club may be done
in any order, but most of the time you will do the craft, athletic activity
and then enjoy a healthy snack. At the close of Bible Club there
is time to spend talking with the kids and cleaning up.
(Each
of the highlighted segments of Club described above is based upon the lesson
plans located in the curriculum published by In His Arms, entitled, Straight
Truth - 52
Bible-Based Lesson Plans to Help Kids in Crisis.)

The Bible Club Sample
Schedule shows how the lesson plan
components fit into a two hour Bible Club.
Children,
of all ages attend Bible Club and are welcome. Babies too young to speak and curious grandmas have all been
regulars at Club. Throughout the
time spent together, leaders and volunteers demonstrate the love of Jesus. A
combination of planned teaching and spontaneous occasions provide the chance to
model Jesus to children who have no idea what healthy relationships and a godly
lifestyle are like.
Bible
Club is flexible and adaptable. No
two Clubs are exactly alike. Not everyone uses the Bible Club model at a homeless facility. Some
creative ministry alternatives include summer Vacation Bible Schools in
government subsidized housing; short-term mission trips to orphanages or inner
city after school programs.
Two hours once a week may not sound like much of an investment, but during the brief time we are able to touch the lives of the children who attend, every opportunity is used to introduce them to the person and character of Jesus Christ. This simple approach is radically transforming the lives of little children.
